Most people know Ashburn for its tech campuses and master-planned communities. But tucked between the subdivisions lies one of Northern Virginia’s most under appreciated trail networks – quiet, paved greenways that thread through parks, along creeks, and between neighborhoods in ways that make you forget you’re in the fastest-growing county in Virginia.
If you’ve lived in Ashburn for a year and only walked the sidewalk loop in your neighborhood, you’re missing out. Here are five Ashburn trails and greenways that deserve a permanent spot in your weekend rotation.
Broad Run Trail Corridor
The Broad Run Trail follows its namesake creek from the Brambleton area northward, winding through wooded buffers most residents don’t even know exist. Stone bridges, blue heron sightings, and stretches so quiet you’d swear you were in Shenandoah — not five minutes from a Wegmans.
Best access point: park at the Brambleton Town Center lot and head north. The trail is mostly paved with some natural-surface spurs that reward the curious. Early mornings, you’ll share the path with deer more often than joggers.
Farmwell Station Trail Loop
This 3.2-mile loop near One Loudoun mixes paved stretches with natural surface trail through meadows and along a small tributary. It’s popular with runners on weekend mornings, but catch it on a Tuesday afternoon and you’ll practically have it to yourself.
The loop passes through a wildflower meadow that peaks in late April – time it right and you’ll see blankets of Virginia bluebells. Pack a water bottle and sunscreen; the open meadow sections can get warm by midday.
Trailside Park to Waxpool Connector
Here’s one the GPS apps miss. From Trailside Park, a narrow connector path heads south toward Waxpool Road through dense deciduous woodland. There’s a short descent to a creek crossing on stepping stones – it feels completely removed from the subdivision visible through the trees.
This connector is best suited for hikers who don’t mind a slightly rugged path. It’s not paved, not well-signed, and absolutely perfect for anyone who wants to feel like they’ve discovered something.
One Loudoun to W&OD Trail Connection
Most people drive to the W&OD Trail. Rookies… A paved connector links One Loudoun directly to the famous 45-mile rail trail, so you can start with a cortado at one of the shops and be cruising westward toward Leesburg within minutes.
From the junction, head west for rolling suburban scenery that gradually gives way to farmland. Head east and you’ll hit the Herndon–Reston stretch with its tunnel-of-trees canopy. Either direction, you’ve turned a coffee run into a proper adventure.
Beaverdam Creek Reservoir Trail
The newest gem in Ashburn’s trail system circles the reservoir in eastern Ashburn. Flat, mostly paved, stroller- and wheelchair-friendly, with water views that feel more lakeside cottage than data center corridor.
Birdwatchers love this one; great blue herons, osprey, and the occasional bald eagle patrol the reservoir. Pack binoculars and a thermos. Benches dot the trail at perfect intervals for pausing, breathing, and remembering why you live here.
Those golden-hour trail mornings are the ones you swear you’ll prioritize “when life slows down.” Spoiler: life doesn’t slow down … You have to carve out the time. SmartSpun Laundry gives Ashburn families over 150 hours back every year with professional laundry pickup and delivery – that’s over three full work-weeks of time you can reinvest in trails, family dinners, or whatever your version of actually living looks like.
